LOO Love

Expanding its footprint by working alongside the community in Matabeleland South Province in Matobo Umzingwane district, Meikles Foundation and Pick n Pay,  partnered with The American Foundation for Children with Aids (AFCA)  and Emfuleni Trust to build 15 long drop toilet facilities for the rural population infected or affected with HIV/AIDS.

Currently, these families are urinating and defecating in the long grass and bushes surrounding their homes resulting in high incidence of diseases of diarrhoea, typhoid, dysentery, and other infections.

The participation in the LooLove Project speaks to the heart of the Foundation’s ethos – working with project recipients to achieve the goal. Under the guidance of Umfeleni Trust the local community participate and contribute to the project by reading the surveyed and agreed area, making bricks, building the structures, enduring ownership, and pride in the project.

The availability of these toilets will have many benefits for the recipient families; reduce the spread of intestinal worms, schistosomiasis, typhoid, cholera, and trachoma, a major health concern in the area; promote dignity and enhance safety, particularly to the women and girls who will now be able to access a toilet for their personal hygiene, especially whilst menstruating, water sources will not be contaminated by faecal matter.  These families will now have cleaner water sources for drinking, cooking, and irrigation of their fields.

A win-win for all concerned
